MONOCHROME TONED IMAGES FROM SCANNED BLACK/WHITE NEGATIVES

o          Produce flat greyscale scan from B/W negative

o          Convert greyscale to RGB

o          Open Curves adjustment layer and change tone and contrast

o        Add Colour Balance layer and adjust to tone image – an example is

·      +10 yellow for highlights

·      +10 yellow & +10 red for mid-tones

·      +30 blue & +20 red for shadows

o        Copy background layer and drag to top of stack

·      Change blend mode to multiply

·      Change opacity to 75% (This is a starting point)

·      This makes the shadow areas a richer tone without compromising the rest of the tonal range

o        Add Curve or Levels adjustment layer to top of stack and adjust to darken mid tones

·      With black pallet background choose a large soft brush set at 10% opacity. Gently wipe away areas you want to lighten (similar to darkroom bleaching and Farmers Reducer – liquid sunlight)
