In the old days (seems like only last week), we all used film; and some of us = made prints and some took slides and the Society had separate competitions for e= ach. Now, almost all of us use digital cameras and the same resulting digital im= ages can be made into prints and/or shown as projected images. To reflect this change, all the ‘slide competitions’ have for some time now, al= so included digital images. So if you have traditionally thought ‘prints’, why not have a go a= t the challenges of the projected image competitions.

The two major competitions are the Steeds Cup and the Nacton Cup – the projected image equivalents to the Holbrook, Clover and Roslyn Trophies for panels of prints.

The Steeds Cup is awarded for a se= t of eight images that show all round ability. Now that’s a real challeng= e! - are you up to it? Entrants usually need to include a wide variety of subjec= ts and techniques.

By contrast, the Nacton Cup is for a set of five = images on a theme chosen and stated by the photographer. The idea of a set of related images is key; but there are very many possibilities e.g. a set = of close-ups, portraits, natural history images, still-life images….. as well as images of an event or an unfolding happenin= g. Sometimes it is possible and useful to have some form of ‘progression’ or development through the set.

Like the equivalent print competitions, both these require pre-planning to get t= he required images rather than searching your image library at the last minute= .

The closing date this year for entry for both these competitions is Monday 10^th November a= nd both will be judged at the On-Screen Section meeting 5^th Decembe= r. See the web-site for detailed rules and entry forms or contact Matt Clarke.=

Then there are the ‘Set Subject’ competitions run in the On-Screen Section throughout the season. For each competition you can enter up to two for the set subject<= /u> and one for ‘open’ (Note the rules are different to those in the Print Section). On judging, marks out of ten are awarded with the highest of the two set subject scores counting towards a season total. The last competition is for a set of three images and only one set may be entered, b= ut it carries double marks i.e. out of twenty. Because individual entries (usu= ally on CD) need to be collated before judging, entries have to be in the meeting before judging (not on the night). Next season’s subjects are:

Finally in the On-Screen Section, we have the George Farthing Trophy, awarded for a ‘Landscape or Seascape’. Again, members may enter two images – closing date Friday 16^th January 2009.
